Tutorial: Medline

Medline is an on-line periodicals index for biology and biomedical studies. Although most users need a password to access the database (i.e. a university account), a small portion of it has been made available to the public through web servers at the National Center for Biotechnology Information. This small portion of the database, called the Medline Subset in Molecular Genetics, contains roughly 700,000 citations. Searching the database can be more efficient through the use of field restrictions. You can limit searching to a single field such as author, gene symbol, article title, publication date, etc.

A Medline record include the title of the article, the author(s), the journal, the date of publication, and an abstract. Each Medline entry has its own unique identifier which can be used to re-access a given record or to reference related information in other online databases such as GenBank and Swiss-Prot.

Try using the Medline query form to look up the entry to which this Medline identifier refers:

90256722

The title of the article should be "State of binding subsites in Asp 101-modified lysozymes."

Many of the journals featured in Medline may have part or all of their content on the WWW. Examples of Web-based science journals include Science and Nature.

The Waksman Challenge is in no way responsible for the creation or upkeep of the Medline database.
